First Impressions: The Falsies Big Eyes Volum' Express Mascara

This is my first impressions review on a recently released mascara. Maybelline has a reputation of releasing great mascaras, such as the regular Falsies and Great Lash mascaras. I picked up this mascara at Target, because I thought this presented an intriguing concept. It is an ingenious concept to put two types of mascara wands in one package. So I figured, why not. I have the color Very Black in the Waterproof version.

"Innovation: Our first dual-ended brush for a captivating eye-opening false lash effect:
1. Upper-lashes brush: pushes lashes up and wide
2. Lower-lashes mini brush: grabs and coats every tiny lash"

This is the wand is meant to "lift upper lashes." The wand has a very interesting shape--it is in a spiral/helix shape, which I'm guessing is supposed lift the upper lashes from all angles to push the lashes upward. At first, I thought the shape was unusual, but as I applied the mascara onto my upper lashes, I felt as if they were really lifting my lashes. Mind you, I have extremely sparse lashes, so this is a great feature.

This is the wand meant to "magnify lower lashes." It is a fairly tiny brush that clings onto the lower lashes. It has the standard shape that mascaras meant for the lower lashes have. Considering that I possess very few lower lashes, and from what I can tell, they do define what few lower lashes I have.

About an hour has passed since I first applied the mascara to both, my upper and lower lashes. I can see that the mascara smudged a little bit on my eyelids. I did apply a primer on eyelids and underneath my lower lashline, because I thought it would prevent smudging from occurring, given that I have pretty oily eyelids in this summer heat. I will provide updates as the day goes on. It is 90 degrees (F) and extremely humid, so I will see if this mascara can brave this excruciatingly hot weather.

After about 9 hours of wear, I am glad to say that the mascara did not smudge or cause any mishap at all. It is surprising that my lashes actually held a curl. There was no faltering whatsoever. I think this success is due to the separate brush wands and the formula. The formula was pretty dry, so that helped my lashes hold a curl. However, I saw more lengthening than volumizing effect. But who knows, with my lashes, anything to make them appear fuller and longer is amazing in my book.

(P.S. I am sorry there are no pictures to show the mascara's wear throughout the day, but my lashes are so short, I could not properly photograph them.)

Pros:
  • Separate brush wands for upper and lower eyelashes
  • Dry formula
  • Holds a curl
  • Overall, did not smudge (except for a tiny bit on my eyelids)
Cons:
  • Did not give the "false lash effect" that it claims, but with my lashes, did great
  • More lengthening than volumizing, which is still good, but not what it claims
Final Thoughts:

Overall, I think this is a really great product. In this hot summer weather, it is great to find mascaras like these, which won't melt due to the heat and humidity. I recommend this product to anyone who has short and sparse "Asian" eyelashes like me.
