First Impressions & Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Eyeshadows

I was super excited to find out that Maybelline would be coming out with pigment versions of their cream shadow line and when I found these in the store, I had to pick them up! I went to Target as per usual (my home away from home) and surveyed the colors Maybelline had. My initial impression of them was disappointment. The range includes twelve shades, six neutral colors and six wild colors. On the colorful side of the pigments were a bright pink, purple, blue, turqouise, gold, and a black with blue shimmers. Within the neutrals were a bronze color, a copper, a brown with gray undertones, a bright olive green, and a light and slightly darker cream pigment. I stared at the collection and nothing interested me but for the sake of the blog I forced myself and bought one pigment in 35 Breaking Bronze. It was quite hard to see what the actual color looks like in the container but they did have what the color of the shade is supposed to look like in the back (as pictured above).

With my declining interest and excitement in this product, let's go ahead and review the Maybelline Color Tatoo Pure Pigments.

Claims: Only our color-boost pigments create powerful color intensity. Our no-mess sifter guarantees easy application. Stays up to 24 hours. Dare to wear explosive color.  (Information from Maybelline website)

The packaging of the pigments are decent. They come in a round plastic container with a screw on lid. I didn't have any problems with it creating a mess and it kept the product secure inside. It does feel cheap but then again it is a drugstore product so I couldn't expect more. I do like the Maybelline Color Tattoo Cream Shadow's packaging better because it's glass and much more sturdy.

Here I have Breaking Bronze, which actually doesn't look very bronze to me. On the left I have it swatched dry and on the right swatched wet. This pigment has a gold and brown tint to it. The brown stands out more when used dry and as you can see when wet, looks very gold. I personally like this color dry. The initial application of the pigment went on very smoothly and very vibrant. It looked amazing on my eyelids and there was no fall out. The consistency is super soft and very pigmented. You can definitely wear it on its own because it's the type of product to appear to have different dimensions in the light, almost duo chrome. It blended out easily but then I realized that if I blended the pigment out too much, the color fades away. So, I had to put on more with a packing motion on my eyelid to maintain the pigments vibrancy or else it would look really patchy. Don't over blend or you'll lose the color!

Now it was time for me to test the wear of the pigment throughout the day. Maybelline claims it is 24 hour wear. I kept checking my lids throughout the day and was happy to find that it did not crease at all and I didn't even use a primer! Sadly, the color did fade gradually. It started off very bright but the color became dull after more than 8 hours of wear. It still left a nice color on my lid and it could be easily seen but the vibrancy was just gone. Later on I tried the pigments with primer and the wear was definitely a bit better but again the pigments intensity did fade.

In the above picture I have 40 Improper Copper shown. I actually prefer this eyeshadow wet just because it seemed have looked brighter and stayed on longer than the Breaking Bronze pigment wet.

Pros:
  • Pigmented
  • Intense color
  • Has a variety of colors, from neutrals to brights
  • Works well dry or wet
  • Has a sifter inside the packaging
  • retails for only $5-7 (pretty cheap!)
Cons:
  • Not long lasting
  • Patchy when blended too much
  • Intensity fades throughout the day
  • Packaging is plastic and cheap, I would suggest not traveling with it

Final Thoughts:

My expectations of these pigments were definitely not met when compared to their counterpart, the cream shadows. If I put that expectation away, I would give these pigments a fair chance. They do give great color payoff and if you're not looking for a shadow that's super long lasting (like people who can't stand to wear makeup for more than five hours) than these pigments will make you happy. Would I suggest buying the whole line? No. One neutral shade and if you're feeling bold, than one bright shade, should do the trick.
